Robust safety knives are particularly well-suited for industrial production, with handles, blades, cutting depths, and safety features tailored to the specific material. In manufacturing, applications range from cutting thin films to powerful cuts through Rubber, sheet material, or multi-layer cardboard. Frequently used tools should be durable, Ergonomic, and easy to use. Depending on the task, MARTOR can recommend all-purpose knives, specialty knives, and even Safety scissors.

In production, safety knives can cut materials such as film, paper webs, rubber, cardboard, tape, plastic strapping band, Textiles, Leather, nonwovens, and other flat materials. They are also suitable for removing protective films, production scraps, and protruding material. Since materials vary in hardness, thickness, elasticity, and surface texture, the optimal combination of knife and blades is crucial for the cutting job.

An all-purpose cutter is suitable for a variety of standard tasks, while a specialty cutter often delivers better results when working with specific materials or in particular work processes. For example, a high-performance all-purpose cutter can be used to cut cardboard, plastic film, Tape, and strapping. It can also handle tougher cutting applications. For long continuous cuts, tough materials, deep cutting depths, hard-to-reach areas, or heavily soiled work areas, specialized cutting tools are often more suitable. A small, standardized selection of tools also simplifies procurement, training, and replacement blade management. MARTOR provides support in this area as well.

Safety knives for production must be designed for frequent use, high cutting forces, and demanding environmental conditions. In manufacturing facilities, tools are sometimes used in multi-shift operations and come into contact with dust, dirt, or tough materials. MARTOR manufactures its robust handles from Aluminium or glass fibre reinforced plastic and combines these materials with durable, high-quality blades. The handle and blades are tested for durability right in the MARTOR test workshop. Certification by the VPA is also a mark of quality.

For work in production and manufacturing, the technology with maximum safety should be selected—one that still allows the material to be cut reliably. A concealed blade offers a particularly high level of user protection and is suitable, among other things, for mostly thinner cardboard, films, or roll stock. For deeper or more force-intensive cuts, knives with fully automatic or automatic blade retraction may be required. For applications that occasionally require a fixed blade, special solutions with an optional locking mechanism—which are also available in the MARTOR product line—can be considered.

For deep or forceful cuts, a sturdy safety knife with a sufficiently long blade projection and a durable blade is recommended. The handle, mechanism, and blade must be able to safely absorb the forces generated during cutting. At the same time, the cutting depth should not exceed what is necessary for the material. When making forceful cuts through particularly hard or tough material, you can place your second hand on the top of the handle to apply additional pressure. However, this also requires a specific handle size and design.

Ergonomic cutting tools reduce the amount of force required and can minimize fatigue during repetitive movements. Well-designed handles support a natural hand position, while smooth-action sliders or squeeze-grip levers relieve strain on the fingers and Thumb. Pliers-style knives (with a squeeze-grip lever) are particularly noteworthy in terms of user comfort and force transmission. A sharp blade requires less pressure and makes it easier to make controlled cuts. When selecting a tool, therefore, not only safety and cutting depth but also handle size, tool weight, and the specific working posture should be taken into account.

The blades must be replaced if the cutting quality deteriorates, more force is required, or visible damage occurs. Frayed cut edges, a jerky cut, or frequent jamming can indicate a dull or unsuitable blade. In production, certain materials—such as Rubber—will eventually become impossible to cut. Before starting work, the knife should therefore be briefly checked for condition and proper function. For knives with a blade retraction mechanism, the blade must continue to retract reliably into the handle after each cut.

New safety knives should first be tested on actual materials and then specified for each application. The type of material, required cutting depth, cutting frequency, work posture, and environmental conditions must also be documented. Employees must test the selected tools in practice and be trained in their safe use. In addition, clear guidelines are required for storage, blade replacement, spare blades, and disposal. This results in a standardized and traceable cutting process, which MARTOR will closely support upon request.
